Romans 2:17-23: How Religion Will Send You To Hell

by Dale Partridge

Over the years, I’ve met many people who know the Bible but do not know Christ. They know the Moral Law but do not know the Gospel. In this episode of Real Christianity, pastor Dale Partridge continues to exposit Romans 2 around the issue of the Law.

Legalism, the practice of law-following to make yourself righteous before God, was and still is commonplace among the Jews. But more than that, it is commonplace among people within the church. In this passage of Scripture, Paul demonstrates how spiritual activity does not equal spiritual security. But more than that, he strips the religious people of this world of their false hope and presents them with their only hope of righteousness—Jesus Christ.

  • Romans 2:17-23

“But if you call yourself a Jew and rely on the law and boast in God and know his will and approve what is excellent, because you are instructed from the law; and if you are sure that you yourself are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness, an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of children, having in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth— you then who teach others, do you not teach yourself? While you preach against stealing, do you steal? You who say that one must not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? You who boast in the law dishonor God by breaking the law.”
