Conquering Anxiety Through Gospel Promises

by Dale Partridge

The past two years of this pandemic have introduced a greater pace of change, pain, and brokenness to our world. There is no shortage of issues for us to be concerned. But how should Christians conduct themselves during such tumultuous times? How can we fight against the tendency to well up worry and fear about the future?

In this episode of Real Christianity, pastor Dale Partridge exposits the words of Jesus in Matthew 6:25-34 in an attempt to clarify his teaching on the issues of anxiety. But more than that, Dale aims to leave listeners with practical truth and application to cling to in these difficult times.

Quotes from this Episode

  • Tryon Edwards: “Anxiety is the poison of human life; the parent of many sins and of more miseries.”
  • John MacArthur: “Don’t worry about the future. Even though it will have its share of problems, they have a way of working themselves out at the time. Just deal with them as they come, for there’s no way to solve them in advance. Providing for tomorrow is good, but worrying about tomorrow is sin because God is the God of tomorrow just like He is the God of today.”
  • Ian McLaren: “What does your anxiety do? It does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow, but it does empty today of its strength. It does not make you escape the evil; it makes you unfit to cope with it when it comes.“
  • John Trapp: “Seek that, to which other things are necessarily connected.” A story may illustrate best “A king said to his particular friend, ‘Ask what thou wilt, and I will give it unto thee.’ He thought within himself, ‘If I ask to be made a general I shall readily obtain it. I will ask something to which all these things shall be added:’ he therefore said, ‘Give me thy daughter to wife.’ This he did knowing that all the dignities of the kingdom should be added unto this gift.”

Scripture References

  • Matthew 6:25-34

“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”

  • Philippians 4:6

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God”
