Are You a Lukewarm Christian?

by Dale Partridge

A.W. Tozer once preached, “There is an entire generation of Christians coming who believe that it is possible to receive Christ without forsaking the world.” This statement was made during the late 1950s.

Sadly, Mr. Tozer’s prediction is more true than ever. We have a church overflowing with men and women who prefer the middle. That is, they don’t like the heat or the cold. They like to blend in and shift sides when it’s convenient but are unwilling to firmly associate themselves with God’s people.

But the scariest part of a lukewarm faith is that its participants are unaware. Like a bee pollinating in the stigma of a flower only to realize they are in a Venus flytrap. But how can a Christian be sure their fire for Christ is deep and not dull? What does the Bible offer as a cure to lukewarm living?

In this episode of Real Christianity, Dale and Veronica Partridge look to the Scriptures to unpack God’s solution to a weak and worrisome faith.

Scripture References

  • Revelation 3:15-16

“I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth.”

  • Matthew 7:21-23

“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!”

  • 1 John 2:3-6

“Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.”

  • 1 John 3:4

“Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness.”

  • Romans 8:11

“But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.”
